What does “pilot” cover here?
A private pilot flies for themselves. A commercial pilot is paid to fly. An airline transport pilot is the licence airlines expect after enough experience. The training, the medical, and the money are not the same project.

Who issues the licence?
A national authority issues the licence. EASA writes common rules for its member states, and the card itself comes from an authority in one of those states. The United Kingdom is not an EASA state, so the UK CAA issues its own licences. An FAA certificate is a different system.

What is the difference between a licence and a rating?
A licence is the permission to act as a pilot at a certain level. A rating is the extra permission to use that licence in a particular aircraft, at night, or in cloud.

What do LAPL, PPL, CPL and ATPL mean?
They are the main aeroplane licence names in the EASA system. The licence-types guide compares them. This answer does not list hour totals or ages.

Is a frozen ATPL a licence?
No. It is industry jargon for a CPL, an instrument rating, and the ATPL theory exams, before the ATPL itself can be issued.

Does this site quote a training price?
No. The cost guide does not invent a price. The cost estimator adds the numbers in the form. Typical example values seed that form as a starting point and stay labelled as an example, not a quote.

When should I think about the medical?
The how-to-become guide suggests booking a medical for the licence you want before you pay for a long course, because a failed or limited medical is better discovered early. Which class you need is the authority’s rule.

How do Class 1, Class 2, and a LAPL medical differ?
In the EASA system they are different certificates. Class 1 is the one associated with professional aeroplane licences, Class 2 with a private pilot licence, and a LAPL medical with a light aircraft pilot licence. The tests on the day depend on the class, your history, and the rule in force.

What is a discovery flight?
It is time in a training aircraft with an instructor, also called a trial lesson or an air-experience flight, so you can see if you like it. It is not a licence, a medical, or a promise that a later hour will be credited.

What should I ask a flight school?
Whether its approval covers the licence you want, and then the questions in the choosing-a-school guide. A published listing was not checked with the authority and is not a recommendation.

What is a METAR?
A METAR is a routine observation at an aerodrome. A TAF is a forecast for a later window. The weather guide shows the shape of the code with an invented example. It is not a briefing.

What is radiotelephony?
It is a small shared vocabulary so that pilots and controllers hear the same instruction. English is the usual language of international flights. A language endorsement for a licence is a state rule, separate from sounding fluent in a club.

Are the flight schools on this site real?
The rows shipped with the site are fictional samples. Their names begin with Sample. A submission can be published later, and publishing is not a verification of the approval number.

Does a removal request take a listing down?
No. The contact form stores the request for an editor. The public page stays up until someone deletes it from the admin takedown page.

What are the calculators for?
They do small pieces of arithmetic. A great-circle distance is not a route. A crosswind component is not an aircraft limit. A unit conversion is not a weather report.

Is the United Kingdom still using EASA licensing?
No. The United Kingdom is not an EASA state. The UK CAA issues its own LAPL, PPL, CPL, and ATPL. They look similar and they are not automatically the same licence.
